Nite Art 2017

This exhibition was curated for the Object Based Learning Labs at the University of Melbourne, as part of Nite Art 2017.

In Lab 1, the exhibition brought a range of objects from the curators and three artists, Elysse De Valle, Melanie Jayne Taylor and Zoe Scoglio. Each object, or cluster of objects, takes a unique approach in mining the fissures between the certainty and physicality of archived museum objects and the intangibility of our brief encounters with them.

In Lab 2, a small lecture theatre, a video played, in lieu of a catalogue essay. The video mimics a PowerPoint presentation, but with no one present, only the disembodied voices heard presenting the ‘lecture’. Two voices are heard in the video, intermingling two approaches to the exhibition. One is a reasonably dry outline of the exhibition and the works, and the other is a more personal, abstract, reflection on the geologic specimens placed by the curators in the adjoining room. The video aims to further engage the exhibition with the pedagogic context and to also mimic the broader themes of the exhibition in a performative manner.

Text from the ‘lecture’ can be read here.

The lecture video can be viewed here.

With thanks to Wendy Love and Kim Greaves for their assistance in the production of this work.

This exhibition was organised, exhibited, and produced on unceded lands, and we acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of these places. The University of Melbourne, Parkville campus is the country of the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people. Thunderbird Park, located on what is now known as Tamborine Mountain, is Wangerriburra Country. The curators organised this exhibition while living in Meanjin/Brisbane, the country of the Turrbal and Jagera people.
